Housing-Related Employment in Pennsylvania

Housing-Related industries in Pennsylvania shed 4,281 jobs in 2007 which represents the biggest decline in this sector since the early 1990s (Figure 1).

Housing-Related industries are defined here to include real estate and residential construction. Last year, real estate shed just under 240 jobs and another 4,000 jobs were lost in residential construction.

Despite the losses in residential construction, total construction employment was up in 2007 by almost 1,000 jobs. The source of strength in construction was entirely in non-residential which added just over 5,000 jobs last year.

It will be several months before we have detailed data on housing-related employment in 2008. What we do have in 2008 is total construction employment in Pennsylvania which since reaching an all time high in January of this year has as of July shed 8,300 (a decline of 3.1%) jobs.
