Update on Pennsylvania Unemployment Claims

According to the Employment and Training Administration initial unemployment claims of 18,552 in Pennsylvania in the week ending Aug. 23 were lower by 1,632 from the previous week. Good news for sure but despite that positive development the economy appears to be getting weaker. Initial claims in August were 15% higher than in August of 2007 (Figure 1). Continued claims in August were 19% higher than the same month a year ago.

Unemployment claims have been rising in Pennsylvania since last summer but the increases so far are smaller than those that occurred at the height of the 1990 and 2001 recessions (Figure 2).
